is this trigeminal neuralgia

by ingel, May 03, 2009 05:55PM
A year ago I suddenly developed sharp pains in my tongue which progressed to severe spasmotic kind of pain that sometimes lasted minutes and was excruciating. Triggers were talking , eating. It finally resolved on its own after about 3 months. MRI and CT ruled out any pathology.
Three weeks ago I began having pain in my tongue again, always on just one side. It is like an electric shock going into the tongue on talking or eating. The same feeling is over the left side of lower jaw triggered by touching the face.
I am told this is likely trigeminal neuralgia and I have been referred to a neurologist. I'm wondering what sort of testing a neurologist would do to confirm this diagnosis.

Hi,
This seems to be trigeminal neuralgia only . Please consult a neurophysician . He may suggest an MRI to find out if the trigeminal nerve is getting compressed at any point . Or he could go for a nerve conduction study. Hope this helps you. Take care.!
