A pinched nerve would not be visualized on plain X-ray, as this procedure is not sensitive for soft tissues. It could only provide clues as to whether a possible pinched nerve is present.
However, a myelogram would show pinched nerves. A myelogram is a specialized X-ray exam in which a contrast agent (a special dye) is injected into your spinal canal through a lumbar tap. Then, an X-ray fluoroscope records the images formed by the dye. Myelograms are helpful in detecting a pinched nerve caused by a herniated disc, bony overgrowth, spinal cord tumors or spinal abscesses.
