laminoplasty vs. discectomy with fussion

Not sure what to go with, one neurosergeon says discectomy with fussion at multi levels. Second opinion says laminoplasty to relieve spinal compression but the discectomy may still be in the future. Im 35 years young turning 80 any advice?

Hi,  i was 33 when i had 3 slipped discs< c4-5< c5-6 & 6-7 and I was totally shocked as was my surgeon.  I had been in so much pain for 10 years that I opted for the operation.  I had a triple discectomy and fusion and was out of bed 1 hour after the op.    I had great support in hospital.  very hard when u go home if u dont have a great support network.  I suffered from panick attacks due to muscle weakness in the neck.  I dont ever regret having the op tho it has given me a new lease of life, whilst i am quite disabled compared to my friends i feel so much happier out of constant pain and i can work now!!!!!  horrible op but it makes u a stronger person x x

I was faced with the same decision. I went with the discectomy simply  because of recovery time and it seems to be alot better. I know that I will need a fusion if I rupture again. But, I thought by then there may be something better.

Hi there.

The differing recommendations of your two doctor reflect their general aggressiveness and outlook in approaching a problem.  The other doctor recommending laminoplasty may be conservative in dealing with the problem.   The one recommending the discectomy with fusion looks at it aggressively.  However, laminoplasty is a quicker procedure with less morbid side effects, while discectomy with fusion is a longer procedure which may have more peri-operative risk.  This is one aspect to think about, however, I suggest you discuss this more in depth with your surgeons.  The choice will also depend on your general state of health, if your doctors think that you will be able to tolerate a longer more invasive procedure.

I hope whatever your surgery, it will turn out OK and I'm hoping for your complete recovery.  Regards and God bless.
