left side of face problems

Ok thank you all in advance for whatever help you can give. About a week and a half ago I woke up and my tongue was numb this went on for about a day. I bit my right side of my tongue which hurt like heck and bled for most of the night. The next day I woke up the right side of my tongue was fine but the left side was still numb along with most of the left side of my face. I guess numb isnt the proper wording I can still feel pain and hot and cold just no tickling sensation no tase on the left side of my tongue. It is a little difficult to move the muscles on the left side of my face and it takes a effort to keep my left eye closed. I dont sound any different when I talk but I can feel slight swelling on the left side not noticable from the outside. Due to the swelling I keep biting that side of my tongue and lip but no matter how hard I manage to bite there is no bleeding I dont know if thats significant but it worrys me. About a month and a half ago I had 2 teeth pulled on that side of my mouth and the dentist had to leave a root tip in could that be the cause of the problem or could it be something unrelated? I am really starting to worry its going on 2 weeks almost now and its not getting better but spreading. Thank you all for any anwers you can give

Hi, Welcome to Medhelp Forum, The symptoms you are describing bear resemblance to two possibilities which can be either facial nerve palsy characterized by inability to close eye, loss of sensation on affected part, difficulty in speaking and mask like face on affected side because facial nerve innervates facial muscles and any damage to facial nerve may cause inability make facial expressions like smiling, frowning etc. Second possibility is Trigeminal neuralgia - neural pain of face with possible loss of sensation on the affected part of face but eye is seldom involved. It is usually associated with history of traumatic extraction of ipsilateral tooth. Third possibilty can be sinusitis due to possible oro-antral fistula after extraction leading to sinus infection. This may lead to dull pain over the cheek area but inability to close eye and tongue involvement may not be explainable with this condition. You may consult an oral surgeon/physician/ neurologist to rule out above stated possibilities who may be able to help you in this regard. Take care.

Thank you for your advice. I know that I will need to see a doctor eventually I have been waiting to get ahold of my dentist who has been out of town. I really hope that its something related to my extactions rather than something more serious. I have no vision change as of yet thankfully but if it keeps spreading the way it has then I am afraid that it is only a matter of time. The affected area runs from midway up my left cheek to the middle of my forhead and wraps around and into my left ear but no hearing loss either.

I know from experience with faciAl trauma requiring plastic suurgery to replace the floor of the eye socket that the teeth and cheek on the same side can be numb. I do not particularly remember the tongue being numb though. Several years after I got an abcess in the eye tooth on this same side that required a root canal so it seems the face eye and teeth on the same side are affected. Also vision on the opposite side can also be affected negatively. Hope my personal experience helps. I saw an neurootolaryngologist (neurologist and ear, nose, and  throat) for the repair and treatment via plastic surgery.
