Hi,
It is a classical symptom of 'Shiatica',the nerve root compression causes pain shooting in the legs.
Recent advancements in the field of spinal surgery like microlumbar discectomies and laser spinal surgery will help in the treatment of such symptoms.Traction can give relief, but the extent of the relief cannot be a certainity.
Please consult a neurosurgeon and get an opinion from a orthopaedician also.
Goodluck.
Hi,
It is effective, if given 25% to 50% of body weight, but in conjunction with other monitored treatments. It is difficult to say how much of this treatment is individually effective.

Hi Jayant,
Little is known about the adverse effects of traction. There is some danger for nerve impingement in heavy traction, i.e., lumbar traction forces exceeding 50% of the total body weight. Lumbar traction forces below 25% of the total body weight do not seem to increase intervertebral distances.
