lower back pain after rod removal

I had my scoliosis surgery in 1976 and in 1994 the herrington rod was removed. I am have severe lower back pain and have been told that I have scoliosis in my lower back.  I am going to see a neurosurgein about this and was wondering what to expect. Anyone have any ideas

Hi there. The various complications following Harrington rod placement in the lower back is flat back syndrome where lumbar spine no longer curves inwards but flattens or bulges outwards causing lumbar kyphosis. Symptoms are back pain and an inability to stand up straight. Surgery to repair this is complex and symptoms may persist after surgery.  Segmented devices instead of rods would have been a better option. Another possibility is of hardware migration including rods breaking, other metal devices like hooks etc. consider seeing the neurosurgeon at the earliest for a definitive diagnosis. Hope this helps. Take care.
