: Could anyone tell me where I could get information on Mitochondrial Myopathy.  I have had one biopsy that shows I have it and one that shows I don't.  I'm confused.

Dear Shan:
Mitochondrial genetics, biochemistry, and diagnosis are difficult to understand. I can imagine how baffling it can be for the uninitiated! If you do want to embark on understanding the issues completely, I suggest beginning with a current college-level textbook on genetics, moving to reference texbooks on muscle diseases and metabolic disorders (Engel et al, and Shriver et al, respectively may be appropriate, and may be available in public/hospital libraries), and graduating by reading current references and information on the file MITOMAP at the website www.gen.emory.edu.
It may be simpler to visit a reputed academic neurology department in the nation with expertise on the subject. If you live near Cleveland, seeing neuromuscular specialists at the Cleveland Clinic (Drs. Mitsumoto, Shields, Levin, or Pioro) may be appropriate. Other places I can suggest are the Columbia-Presbyterian, NY, and the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN.
Good luck!
