There are some discs which cushion the space between the vetebrae. With trauma, age, and arthritis, and other causes the capsule holing the discs (think of them holding a thick gel) can weaken and the disc starts to bulges out (herniate) toward the spinal canal. This is actually very common and shouldn't cause symptoms - doesn't mean it can't. As the disc bulges (herniates) further it can eventually press against the spinal cord itself and cause problems.
