: I was recently diagnosed with ms through a spinal tap.  My doctor sent the fluid to the Cleveland for anaylsis.
Approximately 30 years ago I had a depressed skull fracture froma sledding
accident.  A metal screen was screwed in over the depression.  I have
never had any problems with this.  My question is, can I have an MRI or
does the metal plate preclude that?  I worry that with the MS but no
MRI's I might not be able to have some of the newer drugs.
  Thanks

Dear Dan:
With a plate of the kind you describe, it is quite unlikely that a brain MRI will be informative in your case. Besides, it may not be safe.
If the diagnosis of MS is established in your case without an MRI (as it well can be), I do not see any reason why any approved MS drug, new or old, cannot be offered to you.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to call any of the neurologists specialized in MS at the Mellen Center, Cleveland. The Mellen Center is one of the largest institutions in the US dedicated to MS research and to the multidisciplinary care of MS patients. It is affiliated to the Cleveland Clinic. To make an appointment you would want to call (216)444-8600, or (800)223-2273.
