ms - spinal lesions and treatment

Hi - this is a two part question.  I was dx'd with ms in August.  It appears from an MRI most of my lesions are in my spinal column.  
I have not found any studies as to what types of future effects this might give me, as oppsoed to
lesions within the brain.  Do you have any info on this?
The second part is I am wondering about when to start avonex. My symptoms include
clumsy feet, can't run, stiff legs and some bladder problems.
Should I push to start treatments right away or wait till I get worse?
I don't want to take meds unless its really needed, but is sooner better
than later?
