muscle stiffness and contractions

I have been suffering from twitches and spasms for 7 and a half months, had a normal emg and two normal neuro exams however i have started to experience not only the pain ful spasms but painless ones continually all over my body, they move slowly but never stop- they also go up and down my spine and sometimes get sharp and stick in my spine and cause me to jolt forward all this began 3 days after my last neuro exam. ALSO on a usual walk I SUDDENLY CAME TO A COMPLETE STAND STILL i literally could not move, I HAD SPASMS IN MY THROAT AND COULD NOT SWAALLOW ANY WATER- IT PASSED AND i carried on but since i find it harder to walk like a resistence is stopping me is this spasicity?- i AM TERRIFIED i have als and have been liviving with this fear for 7 and a half months. does spasicity present before weakness. please advise me
Thank you

Sorry to hear about your symptoms. In the setting of a normal EMG and serial neuro exams, it is not likely that the symptoms represent the typical case of ALS which is a progressive weakness with reflex changes and fasciculations. Spasticity can be a clinical finding, but usually NOT if it's the ONLY major symptom. Also, there should have been some objective evidence of abnormal muscle tone on the neuro exam with true spasticity. Keep in mind I have not personally examined you nor have I reviewed your EMG so I cannot definitively say you do or do not have the disease. There are a number of other diseases that can cause spasticity and if your symptoms get worse you should return to the neuro doc right away. Otherwise, stay in touch with him/her and follow up as needed. GOod luck.
