myclonic jerk

my son has been diagnosed with myclonic jerk without eplipsey.  He did an eeg which showed no typical reading of eplipsey.  They have recommened that he take Keppre for his medication.  An mri has not been performed or blood work taken.  His symptom started last week friday.  He had a slight jerk yesterday morning and none today. My question is does myclonic jerk happen every day?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in. Occasional myoclonic jerks may occur in any one, especially when drifting into sleep. Myoclonic jerks can occur as single or multiple episodes, also they can occur as unifocal or multifocal myoclonic jerks.
Multifocal myoclonic jerks are common in patients with hereditary disorders like lipid storage disorders, Ramsay hunt syndrome, sclerosing panencephalitic syndromes, in drug or alcohol withdrawal states.
Jerks can occur even every day, but can be decreased in frequency with treatment.
I would suggest to get an MRI brain done to reveal the causal lesion. An EEG is often helpful in clarifying the epileptic nature of the disorder.
Continue the same medication and discuss with your neurologist regarding MRI.
All the best.
