myelinization in mental illness?

myelinization in mental illness?

If myelinization increases in the normal brain into midlife, is it safe to assume that the same thing can still also and does occur to someone with a diagnosis of mental illness? (Bipolar, MD, SZ etc)

Am hoping it does becuase it offers more hope in restoring cognitive function down the road to someone very close who has a mental illness.  Thanks

Umm I guess it could I'm not sure.

Myelin is the coating on nerves fibres.Nerve cells which possess myelin protector layer is able to deliver the message (stimulation) faster than the nerve cells which the axon doesn’t possess the protector layer.

When there is a loss of the myelin sheath insulating the nerves, it can cause some neurodegenerative autoimmune diseases, like multiple sclerosis.

I don't think that bipolar or schizophrenia are autoimmune diseases and I don't think that they involve a loss of myelin. Although, interestingly, many people with schizophrenia have immunological and inflammatory abnormalities.
