myopathy

I was just dx'ed with a myopathy. I was told by my neuro. that it was mild at this point but that it would progress. She placed me on a medrol dose pak for 6 days then 5 mg qod for 2 weeks then 2 mg qod for long term. At this dosage, will I see the side effects associated with prednisone and long term dosage. In other words, are the side effects dose related or just being on any dose will cause side effects such as wt gain,moon face,bone loss etc. As a nurse, I am aware of side effects and very leary of being on steroids long term. Also, with this being a progressive disease, will this eventually affect my heart or what does progression of the disease affect? I am now having weakness in my upper arms.thighs and hips. This was dx'ed by my EMG.Also, should I take extra CA#,have labs monitored ? I am following up with my dr in 2 weeks and want to be prepared with any questions to ask etc. Thanks so much for your help.

Alternate day dosing of steriods dramatically reduces the side effects. Also at a dose of 2mg on alternating days should not produce significant side effects.
Regarding information about your myopathy, I can not be specific because I am not sure what type you have. You should ask your neurologist which form of myopathy you have. Then you can obtain specific information. Good luck.
