myotonic dystrophy

My wife was diagnosed with MD, also three out of my four children we didnt know about it until the birth of my fourth child who had difficulty breathing when born which caused lack of oxygen that caused him some more troubles.
My question is about the mental effect on those myotonics, my affected children did real bad in school, they had to go to special schools for slow learners, i feel they are so much behind others , my eldest daughter is 30 and my son is 27and my youngest is 13years old.
My two sons have swallowing problem when eating which caused their front teeth to be pushed forward, they all have the problem of opening their hands when closed tightly, my wife has eye problem (she is 48) weak muscles in her eyes made one eye move sideways,she tried surgery to the eye but didnt work.
When they talk it is very difficult to understand them because of weak muscles in the throat.
I know these details are beside my main question, but i thought sharing it will be useful.
