I am hoping that you can help me to narrow down what maybe the cause of the pain which I am having. Four months ago I began to experience severe pain in the region of my kidney, under the back portion of my lower back, under my rib cage. I have been seeking medical attention however the doctors are stumped as to what is causing the problem. I have listed what has been done thus far along with the results of the tests performed. I would appreciate if you could give me your imput as to what the problem maybe.

ivp, cat scan of the abdomen and chest, chest x-ray, ultrasound, biopsy of the bladder, urinalysis--all negative
wbc- 25,000, tenderness in the kidney area- physical examine, swollen lymph glands in the throat, gallum scan- hot in the lungs,ppd- postive, urine test for tb - negative

syptoms- headaches, excessive back pain near the kidney, fatigue, naseau, constant thrist and frequent urination, blisters in the throat, fever of 100 between 10 am and 3 pm

medical history- severe endometrosis and hypoglocemia
complete hysterectomy, removal of adhesions, tonsilectomy,and appendectomy

Dear Claudene Greene:

Fibromyaglia is difficult to treat.  You need to find out what problems your degenerative discs might play on your pain.  Although neurogenic pain does not accend from the distal extremity toward the body, so there might not be much imput from your bad discs.  I would go see a neurologist and have this evaluated.

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgha several months ago.  For years I have had leg pain, odd electric like pain that shoots up from my toes all the way up my leg,  Every night I start aching so bad that nothing will help.  Sometimes it is my entire body aching and other times it is my arms and my legs.  I take a muscle relaxant, ultram and a pill for depession.  I also have several herniated discs in my back and have been diagnosed with degenerative disk disease.  What can I do?  My e mail address is claudeneattexas.net.

Dear Kathy:

It is difficult to tell you anything for sure.  I haven't had the opportunity to exam your father nor seen the data from the surgery.  Yes, it is possible that the pain is from the surgery.  Although coming 18 months (?) after the surgery is alittle long.  What I think I would do is get a good examination form a neurologist, maybe even an EMG.  See if there is a particular nerve distribution and a neurological focus.  If so, there may be another reason for the pain.  He may just have a Parsonage-Turner syndrome or something else.  If it is from the surgery, then another pain medication might be better, such as neurontin or tegratol.

I have a 79 yr old Father.  About 18 months ago he had great pain breathing...after many tests he underwent surgery to cut away the plural which had adhered to the left side of the lung wall. The surgery was successful although they told him that he permanently lost the lung capacity in the left lower quadrate.  Once recovered from the surgery, he felt great.  My Dad also has a heart condition (aterial fib) and has been on cumiden for years.  Around January 5th, 2000 he started having pain in his left should blade area which runs down under his left arm.  He said it's a real deep throbbing/burning pain and the skin surface also feels like it's burning (like a sunburn).  On a scale of 1-10 (10 worst) the pain is 7-8.  This has been on-going for over 2 months. He's had an EKG, chest x-rays and a cat-scan. The doctors now say it's scar tissue from the lung surgery. He's on Darvacet for pain, which helps, but he's been taking pain pills every 3-4 hours for the past 2-1/2 months.  He sleeps in a chair, if he falls asleep and wakes up from the pain (because the pill wore off), he's in great pain and walks the floors for a few hours until the pill kicks in.  He's never out of pain.  He's losing weight because the pain affects his appetite and is causing some depression.  Also I know he's worried about long range affects of pain pills on his one kidney and blood levels because of the cumiden. If it is scar tissue...which affects nerve endings, is there any type of treatment or therapy you could suggest?  Do have any ideas?
If it isn't scar tissue...would you have any other ideas?  Would a MRI tell us anything?

If I bend my neck a certain way, I get unbelievable dizziness and nausea.  I had an MRI done and I have a herniated disc.  This always makes my arms and back ache.  Could be a disc problem.

I have just had an MRI done as well as a CT scan, and the results
showed a cyst on my left tempural lobe. The doctor says it should not be causing any problems, but I have had two seizures.
and nonstop migraines,which I have a history of migraines, only
not this bad. If its not the cyst. What else could it be?  Is it
possible that this doctor is wrong? What do they usually do for
a benign cyst of this nature. I feel its my word against the
results. Will they leave it there, because it shows not to be a
problem, or will they take it out because obviously I am having
migrains and they are not in the normal patern, as well as the
seizures that are also not normal for me. Thank you for any answers or input you may have regarding my problem.

this is the first time i have used the computer. this problem i
have is sometimes iam in bed i will turn my head to the right
on the pillow and i will get very dizzy so i will turn to the
left again and it will pass. but one night i thought i would
just lay there and see if the dizzy feeling would go away. but it
did,nt it got really bad when i got up i got and threw up so for
two months if i layed on my right side i got very dizzy if i woke
up in the morning on my right side i would throw up if i lay on
the floor and a spot on the back of my head the same things
happens . i have lower back pain all of the time and pain in the
back of my neck also i went to the doc i got three dif antibotic
that didnt help  i went to a new doc she did some things to my
lower back and neck and scalp  but i still dont know what makes
this happens it is very scary when i lay on this spot in the back

Dear Wendy:

I am not certain that your pain is neurological in origin.  Your white count is up, low grade fevers, swollen lymph glands, sounds to me that it is something infectious.  What do the ID people think?  You might have a collagen vascular disorder, which can give you a picture of low grade fevers, swollen glands, muscle aches and pains but an elevated sedimentation rate should have been found.  I would lean more toward an infection agent.
