I have been experiencing sharp throbbing pain on the side of my neck and it shoots up behind my ear.  It is not continuous pain but happens off and on all day.  I have not strained or hurt it and it is not like a cramp. Can you give me advice?

Hi,
The most common cause of throbbing neck pain on one side is Carotidynia . Carotidynia is a common neck pain syndrome characterised by dull, throbbing, localized pain over the carotid  artery bifurcation, but may radiate to the mandible (jaw), cheek, eye, or ear  on one side .The causes are Carotid artery aneurysm ,Cranial arteritis , Infection , Carotid artery occlusion . Please go for an MRI or arteriography to rule out the condition . Please consult a cardiologist for the diagnosis and management .Hope this helps you . Take care and regards !

I've been having a similar problem for 10 years now. I'm only 30. I spend a good proportion of my day just trying to relax the muscles in my neck shoulders, face, chest, back, leg. I know that it comes from the mucles in the and around the scapula.

I've visited a lot of docs and chiro and osteo and physio. I know that it gets worse when I'm stressed. Nothing so far has got rid of it. I have just found a new place in south London run and owned by an osteo surgen. Its called 'The Spinal Clinic'. The surgen used to work as an independant surgen at the Independant London.

The facility is very good. They have a lot of machines that they get you on and do exercise on muscles that don't get used, and try and get some balance to them back. TThey are specialist machines. Then they give you physio and then a machine which helps to stop the muscles from spasaming is placed on the back muscles.

Its a bit of money, £76 an hour, they like you to come for 2 hours a week so that you can under go an intensive course. I think its worth it. If you can stop the problem before it gets worse, then do. I forgot t0 say, I also never had one particular trama or accident, so have never really known what created the problem. I put it down to sport as a young man!

It might be due to wrong posture while sleeping. you might have strained your neck muscle which is attached below the ear. Try ice packing and anti inflammatory drugs. If the pain is inside the head then you have to consult a neurologist for an examination. Take care
