neck pain

by Hong-Quan, May 13, 1997 12:00AM

If i had a herniated disk at C 5-6 would'nt i of have neck pain? I woke up "numb" on the right side of my body from my chest down, then i started having problems urinateing and constipation. Also,my right leg hurt and was hard to put a lot of wieght on it. After an mri the Dr.said i needed neck surgery. After the neck surgery the left side of my chest went "numb" then a few weeks after that my left foot. I then had another mri, this time on my brain and spinal cord. I was dx. with MS. and have many active legins on my brain and one or two on my spinal cord. I'm wishing the Dr. would've showed me the first mri film so i could put my mind at rest about if i needed the neck surgery or not. I had no neck or shoulder pain at all. I am taking the Avonex treatment for MS.

A herniated cervical disc will only cause problems if it happens to press
on a nerve root, it the disc has a mild herniation and does not come
close to a nerve it will probably be completely with out symptoms.
Symptoms from cervical disc problems include pain and numbness in the arms,
Numbness, pain or weakness in the legs or below the neck do not usually
come form neck problems.
The symptoms you describe are much more compatible with MS rather than with
cervical disc disease, but if the diagnosis was not known at the time there
was obviously some confusion.
If you do not have any neck problems at this stage, the advice regarding
cervical disc surgery should be reconsidered in the light of the new
information which has become available - ( the fact that you have MS ).
