Dear John:

Sorry to hear about your upcoming surgery.  Complications of any procedure depend alot on the surgeon, his/her experience, the extent of the lesion, where the lesions are located, the patient, the etiology of the lesion, etc.  I am assuming that this is your only option and that has been stated by more than one surgeon.  If only the foramen are involved it makes more sense to try and fix the problem but if more than just foramen changes are noted then depending on the extent of the damage or change, the more extensive surgery is likely the best option.  Without seeing the films and knowing your history it is difficult to tell you much.  I would make sure that surgery is your only option and that all other means of rehab have failed or not possible.  Then pick the best neurosurgeon around, and the best rehab team.

I hope all goes well, sorry I am not much help.

Sincerely,

CCF Neuro MD
