nerve pain-IV

Hi
I just had surgery 2wks ago and since then I have had alot of pain from where they put the IV in my hand down to my elbow. Another thing is I can not bend my thumb and have no strength in that area. They put the IV on my hand below my thumb area. Is this common? I also can not stretch my arm out with out having alot of shooting pain through my arm.  Again how common is this and how long will this last?

Hi there. You suffering from superficial thrombophlebitis due to inflammation or injury  of the veins punctured for putting the intravenous catheter. symptoms are skin redness or inflammation along the vein below, warm tissue, tender vein worse with pressure, limb pain, hardened or indurated vein. Tests to confirm diagnosis  are Doppler ultrasound, duplex ultrasound and venography.  blood cultures are sent. Treatment involves warm compress to the area, limb elevation, remove the catheter if still in situ. Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, antibiotics if infection tests positive.  Deeper clots need to be ruled out. Take care.

It's been about 10wks, had therapy and there has been no improvement at all in my thumb, still can not get it to bend on it's own. Orthopedic wants to give it 3 more wks and is considering sugery. EMG showed median nerve damage and anterior nerve damage as well. What are your thoughts on having surgery. It's become quite a problem for me to grab large things or grasp a ball too without having that thumb to bend.

Thank you for your time and help. Had a EMG test done that showed damage to nerve and my regular dr suggested physical therapy for my thumb/hand. Hopefully I can get full use of my thumb back soon.
