Hi there.  Usually in simple stretch injury or mild tear will heal on its own, but the child should receive intensive physical therapy so that the arm doesnot stiffen. Gentle massage and range of motion therapy are used to keep the muscles strong and joint lubricated. If the damage as assessed by the neurologist is extensive, this may require surgery. If the nerves cannot function properly, tendon transplants are used. This is usually undertaken after 3 to 6 months of age. Even with surgery, nerve injuries heal very slowly and may take two years or more to recover or may leave limited range of motion. Hope this helps. Take care.
