neuritis

My father is 78 year old. he experiences the feeling of ants craling in his exterior ear surrounding some 4 months ago. Although there was none, it was just a sensation. He had herpes zoster some 10 years back and had a stroke 6 years ago. When he visited his dermatologist, she said it is a neuritis, because the right ear is the only side that experiences that sensation. but a month ago, both ears experience the same sensaiton. We went to see a neurologist, he said since it is both ears now, there is no way it could be a neuritis, because if it is, it will only affect one side, but not both ears.

The neurologist susgested that it could have been caused by the herpes zoster virus or allergic reaction to wild root hair cream which is stale  because my dad bought it some 10 years ago yet and he is still using it.

Would like to seek help if indeed it is a neuritis or it is only the herpes zoster or only an allergic reaction.
