ocular myesthenia

About 4 months ago, i woke up having double vision(lateral)at the left eye,I went to see an eye doctor and after several examinations,she had me done an MRI of the brain,the result was normal by that time she couldn't find anything until about 2 months later when I started to develop drooping of the eyelid at my right eye.She then referred me to a neurologist with a working diagnosis of ocular myesthenia.The neurologist asks me to do some blood tests and a CT scan of the chest,both of which has no results yet.She also gave me Mestinon 60mg which I take 1/2 tablet every 4 hours.The drooping of the eyelid has been relieved a little but the double vision doesn't seem to improve. My doctor suggested that I should go to an institution where I could get better diagnosis and treatment. My questions are:1.Does the double vision really takes time before it improves, basically how long or does it ever go back to normal at all? 2.I don't work yet, I just came and still jobless and has no insurance, could you suggest any hospitals or physicians here in NJ where I can get diagnosed better and will be given proper treatment which would accept long term payment plans(I really need help,please!)?

Dear Ms. Acantilado:

From your description, the diagnosis seems appropriate.  Once the lab tests return, you will know more about the diagnosis.  Do you have tendon reflexes or have you lost these? If you also have lost your reflexes then you might have a entity called Miller Fisher, a variant of Guillian-Barre.  But, the lab tests will give you a better idea. If you do have myasthenia gravis, then the dose of mestinon might be alittle low.  However, I would check with your neurologist and make sure of the diagnosis before changing medication doses.

You could go to any of the large teaching hospitals in the area.  These places tend to see more diseases and are likely to be able to help you.
