This may be a virus that resides in the C2 dorsalParinaud syndrome ganglion and normally remains dormant, but when it flares up (during a cold or during very stressful periods) causes sharp pains in the back of your head together with so-called "referred" pain in your ear or eye. That's how my occipital neuralgia started out many years ago, before it finally turned chronic - and later became constant and severe. A good pain clinic is a good place to turn for help if the pain starts ruining your life.
