osteomyelitis

I injury my leg June 99 with a compound fracture of the tibia-fibula that was pin & plated
I had some hardware failure. I had to have some of the hardware removed in Jan 2000
in March I developed a M R SA infection and was treated by surgery {debriedment} and
6 weeks with vancomycin {iv picc line} ,and by mouth ampicillin, cipro
I finish my treatment in April and in May leg was infected again ,the incision busted open with a pus drainage. I also show that I had staph infection I had more surgery to remove the rest of the hardware except for the screws that were broken off in my bone. I was treated with ampicillin and kelfex 500mg that was a year ago & my leg has never stop draining. I have been off of antibiotics for 10 months now . I was told that I had a deep bone infection. My Dr. has been monitoring my progress, but has told me I have chronic osteomyelitis and he will have to do a bone scan and blood work with the possibility of more surgery ,debriedment and remove the screws that are still in my leg. My question is there any other treatment available for osteomyelitis something new? I really don

Dear Danny:

Sorry that you have had such a severe complication to surgery.  I m afraid that the only way to clear an infection as you have is to remove the offending source.  Usually, antibiotics can do the trick but sometimes one has to surgically remove the inducing agent involved.  At this point, there are not many options as you have already failed two rounds of antibiotics.
