pain in the neck

Is a swollen occipital gland normal if you just had neck surgey on the same side? I had a foraminectomy.

Hi there. Lymph nodes swelling usually indicates a body part swelling. Occipital lymphnodes swelling indicates an infection of the scalp or other neighboring regions. Infections could be bacterial, viral in origin, scalp conditions like scalp ringworm infection, lice infestation, dandruff and bug bites. Swelling could also result from neighbouring area conditions like ear infections, throat infection and rubella. Occipital nodes swelling could also be due to metastasis of cancer cells. Consult your doctor to investigate if this is an infection. Watch and exercise caution if the nodes are growing. You must avoid constricting the swollen nodes. Pain in the neck could be post operative or due to the pre existing disc condition for which foraminotomy was done and surgical manipulation. Nerve compression during the procedure can also contribute. Consult a neurologist. Take care.
