pain medication

chronic pain x 40+ years,

I am currently using 8 mg dilaudid for pain management, approximately 120 every three weeks. I find that I use more of this medication when I encounter my pain at waking, when I open my eyes at 4AM and it feels like someone has stabbed an ice pick through the side of my head, those days it takes 16 mg at onset, then 8 more mg one hour later just to get it under control. and those days I use more pain meds than a day when the pain doesn't start till later in the day. I see the doctor tomorrow and I am going to see if she will start me on MS Contin 30mg the ones you take every 12 hours and then I can use the dialudid for break through pain. does this makes more sense? just searching for answers. My doctor listens to me and is always very open to my concerns and opinions about my pain medication use, I am not addicted to medication and never have been and always get off the pain meds for two weeks every year jut to make sure for myself (don't want to be an addict) any addvice would be nice...
