paralyzed vocal cord

I am seeing a NS and was told I need a 2 level fusion on C5-6 & C6-7 due to bone spurs, arthritis, spondylolisthesis and herniations, with severe narrowing of the spinal canal.  The problem is I have paralysis of the Left vocal cord, which I believe happened after a knee surgery in 95.  I woke up from surgery and had a hard time breathing.  My ENT DR. doesn't believe it was caused from that.  My NS believes it could very well have been caused from that.  He doesn't feel I should have the neck surgery as the risk is too great.  He said he has read where intubation can indeed cause paralysis.  The ENT DR. suggested the NS go in from the left side, but NS said he is righthanded and has never done it from the left.  He wants me to come back every 2 months to keep an eye on things and he suggested that I get a hard universal collar to wear on long road trips & not to ever get spinal manipulation.  Have you had any experience with surgery on a patient who already has a paralyzed vocal cord & what is your opinion on this?  Thanks so much for this site it's very informative.

Since the two doctors are disagreeing with regard to safety for proceeding to surgery, I would recommend a second opinion at an academic spine center. They will be able to review your examination and studies and then provide a specific answer. Without reviewing your specific case it is difficult to comment on the feasability of surgery or indication. If you are in the area we have an excellent spine center. Good luck.
