partial seizure versus strange, involuntary panic attacks

I've had a problem that has been going on since I gave birth by C-section in 2006.  I have a tingling sensation (as if my hands and feet are going to sleep) that never goes away.  It is mostly in my hands and feet, but has traveled up my legs into my thighs, arms, chest, mouth, face, neck, and head.  The more active I am, the stronger the sensation becomes, and I feel it most when I hold still or am at rest.  Also, I see flashing lights when I close my eyes, kind of like after staring at a strobe light -- pulsating, vibrating.  This was bad for a while in 2006, then it improved, though never went away.  I was also getting recurrent viral infections every 2 weeks or so.  For a couple years, things improved, but did not disappear.  After giving birth again in April of 2009 by C-section, 4-6 weeks postpartum, after my 4th URI, I began having severe pain all over and severe tingling.  They found that I had a vitamin D level of 17 and I was put on 50,000 units twice a week (now on week 3).  This greatly helped the pain, almost immediately, but not the tingling.  The tingling seems to have worsened.

I'm concerned beyond this because I've started having episodes (before and after taking vitamin D) of muscle spasms and cramps, to the point that my legs lock and I'm trembling and stiff all over.  It also feels as if I'm holding my breath or can't relax my lungs.  This lasts anywhere from 5-10 minutes and does not change in duration with or without taking Ativan.  It seems to resolve on its own, and I've learned to just wait it out, though it scares me, because I feel very short of breath and unable to move appropriately or relax.  This often happens after I've done more than usual -- took a walk or had a busy day -- though lately, it's been happening out of the blue.  I do also have GI issues, and I think a possible malabsorption issue that began 4-6 weeks postpartum, possibly related to a viral infection?  Anyway, these episodes every time resolve quite suddenly, and at the exact same time that they resolve, I get a rush of emotion that causes me to cry.  It's strange, because it feels like I'm crying out of relief, but I also am crying from being overwhelmed.  My PCP says she will send me to a neurologist for the tingling, but does not think that they will find anything.  I had an MRI and head CT in 2006 that were both negative.  My thyroid functions have always been normal.  I am waiting for blood work to check my calcium levels today.  I'm curious if the parathyroids have anything to do with this.  Anyway, I'm baffled and a little scared because these episodes come on and I can't stop them.  Also, there does seem to be an "aura" of sorts before it happens.  I usually know when it's going to hit.  I get a sense of nervousness, like butterflies in my stomach and a feeling of illness, and sometimes an excited feeling in my extremities.  Should I go to the neurologist?  What leads could you offer?  Thank you so much!
