pediatric cardiac surgery and phrenic nerve damage

by jalbro, May 18, 2008 04:47PM
My 7 month old baby had surgical correction for Tetralogy of Fallot in Feb.  For the past few weeks I've noticed that she breathes very fast and grunts and pants when she's playing. She even breathes fast when I hold her upright in my arms.  I took her back to her cardiologist this week and he discovered that the left side of her diaphragm isn't moving as fast as the other side. He said she has a bruised phrenic nerve.  I''ve been told that it will heal within 6 to 9 months and to make sure she get's lot's of rest inbetween her play times.

My questions are:  Does the phrenic nerve affect other parts of her body? Does this cause fatigue or pain? Is there a possibility that it will not heal?

Thanks so much

Hi there.

I understand your concern.

The phrenic nerve is the nerve that stimulates the diaphragm to contract, so that the lungs can fill with air.  It does not supply any other structures.  Damage to the phrenic nerve during cardiac surgery is a not so uncommon occurrence and sometimes, this can be an unavoidable risk.  This would cause fatigue since only one side of the lung is getting  the adequate air flow for oxygen exchange.  The phrenic injury can heal given some time, however I suggest that you take him for evaluation to his doctor if symptoms worsen or if you are noticing anything outside the usual.

Hoping for a full recovery.  Regards and God bless.
