peripheral vision loss

peripheral vision loss

For the past year my 18 y/o healthy son has had recurrent, spontaneous loss of peripheral vision in his L eye. These lasted for a few seconds at the most. Never a headache or any other symptoms with it. He attributed it to florescent lights. He did not report these occurences to anyone. In Dec 2007 he told me about one. It didn't last long. Then he had another he told me about in Jan 2008. He was out of college on Christmas break for both of these. On Feb 4 2008 he awoke with no peripheral vision on his L eye. He thought it would go away like the other times. This time it lasted all day. He went to an optometrist on campus. She diagnosed an inferior horseshoe tear on the retina. He was sent to a retinal specialist who said there was nothing wrong with the retina. Then on to a field of vision guy who sent him immediately for an MRI. (apparently there was something wrong with the FOV test). MRI is normal. On Feb 20 his vision go worse in that eye. He was sent to the ER, saw an opthamologist, was told he thought my son had optic neuritis but wanted him to see a neurologist. So he did on Feb 21. She disagreed with that diagnosis. She did alot of lab work, all normal, but had a pos Lyme test. She then sent him to a disease specialist who disagreed with that. Neither specialist wanted to put him on antibiotics and/or steroids. The neuro then referred him to a neuro-opthamolist in Denver which he can't see until March 31. Apparently they don't consider an 18 y/o losing his vision as "urgent". I don't know know what to do. My son is getting frustrated, sad, and has put everything on hold until he has a diagnosis. He wants to fly to Chicago for spring break. He was told no. He wanted to go to Utah for scuba diving certification. He was told no.  No real reason, she just didn't think it was a good idea.  We need help. The vision is no worse since Feb 20 but also no better. I have read and read the internet trying to find out what it possibly could be. I hit on this site. Please help us if you can. Thank you, gigi

I have had vision problems from MS, and it does not sound like that.   But I did have a couple migraines that involved my vision and did not have headaches.  Half my vision went dark once, and zig zag colors and dim vision other times.  Have him close his eyes when this happens and see if he can "see" anything (which is really electric activity in his brain.  If so, go online and look up 'migraine aura without headache".  It is worth a try.
