plaquenil

My wife was taking plaquenil for possible lupus for several years. She also has fibromyalgia and has experienced extreme weakness in her lower legs and arms and hands. We have two neurosurgeons saying she has severe cervical stenosis and needs an immediate operation and two who say she does not need it. Recently her rheumatologist took her off the plaquenil, deciding it is unlikely she has lupus, and said in rare circumstances plaquenil can cause neurological problems. At the same time she came off the plaquenil she received 20 mg of steroids for 10 days, then reduced to 5 mg. She is now doing much better, but her neurologist says she must have neck surgery immediately. Could the steroids still be responsible for her improvement? How long before they stop helping? If the plaquenil was causing a problem, how long before it leaves your system? any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
