: Dear sir ,
I have a friend with severe platybasia . Her odontoid projects right through the foramen magnum and is compressing the midbrain . There has been complicating trauma . At the age of 40 she is now spastic in the left leg and recently the left arm.
I know she needs surgery. Does the CCF have experience in this field?
                           Thank you.

Dear Dr. Leighton,
The Cleveland Clinic Foundation has 2 neurosurgeons who specialize in spine and skull base disorders.  Dr. Joung Lee specializes in skull base disorders and Dr. Ian Kalfas specializes in spine.  An appointment with Dr. Lee should be made for the initial evaluation due to the area that is involved.  His clinic day is the same as Dr. Kalfas, so if it is decided that he would be better suited for the operation or for an additional opinion, that can be simply done that same visit.  To call for an appointment 216-444-5670 or 1-800-223-2273 ext 45670.  I recommend them both, highly.  They will be unavailable until mid July, but an appointment should be made now if your friend considers this option.  Feel free to call that number for additional information.
