I was recently in a very bad car accident. An MRI that was done days after showed demyelination around the areas of C5-C6 I believe.  I am experiencing very mild numbness and tingling in my right leg, also an extreme sensitivity to cold thats borderline painful. In addition I cannot feel anything warm or hot on my right leg.  I was told by the attending doctor at the hospital that this was due to the demyelination but the demyelination was NOT caused by the accident. I followed up with a neurologist and he said that since i haven't had any previous symptoms, the demyelination IS a result of the accident.  My questions is simply which doctor is right? Is it possible to have demyelination and not exhibit any symptoms? Can it be reversed or cured, and if not, what are any treatment options? And can trauma cause this to occur?

below is copied and pasted from wikapedia:

Demyelination is the act of demyelinating, or the loss of the myelin sheath insulating the nerves, and is the hallmark of some neurodegenerative autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, transverse myelitis, Alexander's disease, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, Guillain-Barré Syndrome and central pontine myelinosis. Sufferers of pernicious anaemia can also suffer nerve damage if the condition is not diagnosed quickly. Sub-acute combined degeneration of the cord secondary to pernicious anaemia can lead to anything from slight peripheral nerve damage to severe damage to the central nervous system affecting speech, balance and cognitive awareness. When myelin degrades, conduction of signals along the nerve can be impaired or lost and the nerve eventually withers.

it is possible u've had this and the accident has shifted things and there is added pressure to the area....from what I've read there is research going on to find a way to repair this condition, to date none has been found.

Good luck
Godspeed
