polyneuropathy after gastric bypass

I have polyneuropathy and am 12 years post gatric bypass.  I tried to get my PCP to order extensive labwork but she said that wasn't necessary.  I recently saw a neurologist CRPN but was not aware that polyneuropathy could be caused by micronutrient deficiency.  I have never had copper, E, Zinc etc. checked.  B12 is ok.  I think the average person in the medical community is unaware of this.  I feel like I am so weak.  Recently had tarsal tunnel surgery on right foot and need it on left.  It is Sunday and do you think I could go to an ER or walk in center with medical literature supporting the need to check these micronutrients? I don't think the medical community is aware enough of this complication.    I am also a nurse.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi!
I am sorry to hear about your medical problems. Yes, after 12 years of gastric bypass, deficiencies of minerals, vitamins and trace elements may develop and cause poly-neuropathy. If vitamin B12 is ok then vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin D, electrolytes and blood glucose levels should be checked. Also, effort should be made to look into the possibility of cholesterol, albumin and thyroid disorder.
After you opt for these tests, you can take a multi-vitamin supplement with zinc and magnesium, iron, multivitamins including B12 and B6. Drink fluids to maintain the electrolyte balance: lemonade, clear soups, fruit juice etc. There are researches supporting all the above causes of polyneuropathy post gastric bypass, so please discuss with your doctor. Hope this helps. Take care!
