possible brain tumor or too much worry?

possible brain tumor or too much worry?

Maybe you could offer me some help with this. I am a 19 y/o female who is 3 months post partum. I started having visual disturbances in the form of flashing lights and trails in my vision during mid pregnancy that bothered me. I visited an opthalmologist that confirmed that there was nothing wrong with my eyes except simple nearsightedness. The problems with vision increased after alot of worrying and after the baby was born. This was followed by a feeling of depression alternating with  anxiety. The anxiety has been terrible. I have been experiencing short term memory loss and periods of extreme anxiety and panic attacks. I started worrying about a brain tumor because of the memory loss (which isn't terrible, just short term and very temporary, and have since been having headaches that start in my temples and spread to my forehead. The pain in my temples is almost constant. Besides those symptoms, I have been very lightheaded, have trembling in my hands, weakness, lack of concentration, nervousness-startling easily ( I jump at even a slightly loud noise.) I worry all the time, I don't even want anything to do with my baby because of this. For the past couple of days, I've had no appetite. Tonight I had an episode of weakness and fatigue all over my body, followed by a panic attack and a feeling of faintness. I had no appetite all day long. If I try to lie down to sleep at night, I panic and have to get back up out of bed. I still haven't gotten a menstrual period since I've had the baby. The anxiety is getting disabling and preventing me from living a normal life. Does this sound like a problem with hormones, or perhaps my thyroid? I am now worried to death that I have a brain tumor and the anxiety is getting awful...any suggestions on what could be wrong here? Thank you so much!

Dear Wendy,
Thank you for your question. It sounds like you are quite disabled from your symptoms. First of all, I don't think you have a brain tumor from the symptoms that you described. Post partum depression is not uncommon.
In addition you also describe symptoms of generalized anxiety with panic attacks. You are correct in that some medical conditions (hyperthyroid for example,) can mimic panic or anxiety attack. The only way to be sure is to get a blood test for thyroid function. You should seek help from either a psychologist (if you hate to take drugs), or a psychiatrist. They can help by prescribing either medication or some psychotheraphy for you.
I suggest that you do this sooner rather than later. You will feel better.
You should enjoy your baby rather than worrying about brain tumor.
Finally, migraine headache is very common, it can be preceded by flashlight, zigzag line, spots, in your visual fields, which then followed by headache that is pounding on one side of the head. This headache may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to bright light and loud noises, and lasts for several hours to days.
There are medications you can take, such as Exedrin or Ibuprofen.
You can consult a neurologist or your primary care doctor should be familiar with this as well.
Good luck to you, I hope that the information above is helpful.
God bless.
