possibly hereditary

by jai07, Jun 03, 2008 08:27PM
I have had seizures for the past 4 years.  I have been through many tests to find nothing.  I found out that my uncle on my dads side, my grandfather, my 3 counsins have all had seizures in the past too!  My female cousin started hers at 45 and is on dilantin, I s started mine at 45 too!  What could cause this to happen to all my family members  with no results known.  Could this be some genetic thing?  Thanks any answer would be appreciated.

Hi there.

From your family history, it is indeed likely that these seizures are genetic and hereditarily passed on from one generation to another.  Most often, the exact cause of these seizures cannot be pinpointed after extensive work-ups and hence termed 'idiopathic' seizures.  The best course of treatment is through medications that control the seizures and counseling.  I genetic counselor consult may be in order, so that you and your family members can predict the future incidence of the condition in your family.

Regards and God bless.
