post radiation edema

post radiation edema

My dear friend had a large meningioma surgically removed about 18 mos. ago.  It seemed to be a convex tumor, covering the entire top of the brain.  Surgery was very successful though one or two little 'tails' of the tumor could not be removed.  Upon scans after 60 - 90 days, radiation was imperative as the 'tails' were growing.  Radiation was successful; at one year ago.  About 3 mos. ago, which would be about 9 mos. post radiation, my friend had developed quite severe edema around the brain.  Phone calls have been made to the specialists and there's no clear cut answer about how long this edema will last, and what the prognosis is now.  My friend has an appt. scheduled for four weeks from now, but I'm wondering about the nature of this edema.  Is this normal and typically how long will it last?  Basically, I am asking if there is apt to be a good prognosis.

Sounds like what my husband is going through after having Cyberknife radiosurgery to a meningioma regrowth.  Edema causing problems and the Decadron (steroid) that he was put on caused even more problems.  I do not have an answer for you but know that edema after radiation is a VERY common side effect.  Usually the Decadron will help.
