post surgery spinal scar tissue

post surgery spinal scar tissue

I had a succesful operation to remove a benign tumor from my spine which was effecting my left ankle reflex.  This was over 15 years ago and now some four years ago I had a reoccurrence of the same symptoms.  Further tests, MRI, Mylogram, etc...did not reveal any new tumors.  The neurosurgeon diagnosis  is scar tissue from the original operation causing the nerve damage which now leaves me with no left ankle reflex and major loss of the left calf muscle.  I was told by the doctor to prepare to live with it.  I am inquiring if any new technology has been developed to remove the scar tissue  to give me another 10 plus years of mobility.  Please give me any information about this topic you may have available.  Thanks!  Wayne

Dear Wayne,
Scar tissue that causes symptoms after previous surgery can be difficult to manage.  It can often be released with another surgery, but tends to come back afterwards.  You should discuss this issue with your surgeon for a realistic prognosis of improvement in your symptoms in light of the degree of scarring on the scans.
There are no 'new' ways of treating scar in this particular situation, though the prospect would be intriguing.
Good luck.
