my friends son is 9 yrs old normal delievery at term has mental retardation .had an mri report of which read prominent vr spaces for the age of the patient.there were punctate csf intensity spaces on mr which i believe can also be seen normally in upto 23% cases below 20 yrs age .would this be considerd abnormal and mps be suspected as per the report. the child has microcephaly clinically .

Although I can't comment on the accuracy of the reading of the MRI as I have not personally reviewed the film, I can explain what Virchow Robin spaces are. They're just enlarged spaces around a blood vessel filled with CSF. That's it. It's a completely normal finding that we see in totalyl normal patients all the time. However, in a patient with mental retardation and microcephaly, the radiologist needs to look at those areas showing up on the MRI very carefully and make sure they are indeed virchow robin spaces and not something else. Your friend can always bring the films to a neurologist for a second opinion. Hope that helps.
