remote symptomatic partial epilepsy

by bag77, Oct 26, 2006 12:00AM
My daughter was diagnosed this summer with partial motor epilepsy.  We found out through an MRI that she has a 4 cm cystic appearing structure in the left perisylvian region in the left parietal lobe.  The neurosurgeon said it is cystic encephalomalacia that is common after a stroke.  It is an old cerebral infarction she sustained at birth.  They are calling it a perinatal insult.  The copy of the report is also says it is in the extra-axial space.  There is no shift or edema.  We have been told it is not a tumor or growth.  She is on trileptal and has not had any seizures since.  If her seizures were permanent the surgeon said that the cyst or cavity he called it is very focal and in a good spot to resect. My daughter has been developmentally normal her entire life.  She is however dominantly left handed which suggest the stroke happened early in life and perhaps at birth.  She was an emergency c-sect baby with fetal distress and jaundice.  She also had rapid breathing at birth. My questions are:

1.  Why did she develop epilepsy so many years after the insult?
2.  What is extra-axial space?
3.  If this is from a perinatal insult could she have further insults?
4.  Can she achieve a remission of this type of epilepsy and eventually get off her AED?
5.  If she has had normal cognitive and physical development could she have any setbacks?

Sorry for the long winded note, however, we have been very concerned for her well-being.  Thank you for any response.
