Hello Ruth,
Double vision is referred to as 'diplopia' in medical terminology.  There are a wide range of causes for diplopia.  They range from such disoders as stroke, myesthenia gravis (a disorder of nerve impulse not being able to reach the muscles they innervate normally), nerve damage that innervate the eye muscles as a result of diabetes, hypertension, or an aneurysm, and damage to the retina which is the layer of cells within the eye that transforms light energy into nerve impulses.  This is just a short list of possible causes that produce double vision.  These different diseases have varying degrees of severity from life treatening diseases like aneuryms and strokes to more benign disorders such as age related difficulty in crossing the eys, that could produce double vision.  I would strongly urge you to see a consultation with your local neurologist to look into this problem.
