severe cramp fracture site

I have had severe ankle spasms and long standing cramp in the same area.Sometimes moves up leg and around ankle.I put deep heat and a hot pack to help relax the muscles.Any other suggestions and what causes them I would greatly appreciate.Thank you and God bless.

I do have a calcium deficency but unable to take tablets as adhesions make the bowel unable to work without severe pain.Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

thanks so much for advice.will try those things and go to my doc to discuss other issues.I had a spiral communited fracture of the tibia and fibula and stress fracture talus with a fied 8 screw titanium plate inserted.
So doc unsure what to do as I have severe osteoporosis and my bones may fracture if moved at all.

Dear Dewie, how are you doing? Welcome to medhelp forum. It appears from your post that you sustained an ankle fracture sometime back. Injury can initiate a protective muscle spasm, to stabilize the area and minimize movement. There are certain other causes of cramps apart from this. These are secondary to vigorous use of muscles affected and fatigue, rest or nighttime cramps, dehydration, low calcium, potassium and magnesium in body. Sometime claudicating pain in calves due to decreased blood supply can mimic a cramp.
You could try stretching the muscle, stand up and walk about. Try to bend the ankle by pulling toes towards head while lying still with legs straight. Gentle massaging of the muscle and heat application helps.
Consult a physician for clinical evaluation and biochemical profile to rule out any electrolytes and dehydration issue.
