I wish I could give you some answers. Yours starts in your neck. When did this all start? And, do you have this pain all day/night or just occasionally?

I've been having an issue with my left shoulder and arm for almost 5 months. Can you believe I still don't know what the cause is? I may never know. After many doctor's visits, the only thing he can think of is overuse, or repetitive stress injury (RSI). Nothing helps. The pain started out initially at the bottom of the back of my armpit, like on the shoulder blade area. Then, in time, it radiated to the top of my arm on that big muscle. Then, sometimes the pain would be in the back part of the shoulder blade. Lately, it seems like it's the whole arm, aching, and then sometimes my fingers and front part of my arm (ulnar)gets slightly numb. There isn't a day that goes by that I am not "aware" of my left shoulder and arm, unlike just not being aware of anything unusual with my right shoulder and arm.

Now, my neck hurts after I started seeing a chiropractor, who also thinks it's work related, since I sit in a fixed position at a microscope all day and do small , repetitive things mostly left arm. I can't continue seeing him because the exercises are not helping, but only seeming to make my neck sore.

Let me know some more details about your situation and maybe we can help each other!

haily's momma'

Hi im glad you found the link usful.
I have been doing alote of research on many
different illnesses lately.
You would really be amazed how many symptoms, pains, sensations are caused by stress and anxiety.
I would really suggest, relaxation and mindfulness!
being a mom you probly don't have much time for urself.. but really try to pamper yourself .. take a hot bath, maybe do light shoulder exercises..to relieve stress ( check with ur docter first) .. your shoulder's carry alot of weight and burden, show yourself some TLC im sure you'll see a difference in how you feel.

Best of Luck

Thank you for the link. I tried having hubby give me a massage but it was so painful. And, he kept telling me he was being careful and light and barely putting pressure on my back and neck!

I'm really tired of living in fear.

Good luck to you and if I can help you in any way, let me know.

Tumbleweed,
My sympathies on the pain, I remember it well.  It seemed nothing could touch it, even the heavy pain medications and anti-inflamatories that the docs prescribe.  The pain is bad enough, but it just doesn't let up and it wears you down.  I had similar pain twelve years ago and ended up with cervical fusion due to bulges at c4-5-6-7 (although) they only fused 5-6-7.  That got rid of the pain which never went away no matter what position I tried to put my arm in or my neck.  I also had the twitching, but that was in my deltoid muscle, and loss of strength accompanied by atrophy.  Post surgery, my pain was gone and it took some time to build the muscle back up (still is somewhat atrophied).  I wish I could have waited until they had the prosthetic disks available then, but I probably would have ended up losing the use of that arm.  If it comes down to surgery for you, try to go for the prosthetic disks which will allow the spine area to continue to move.

To Haleys Mom,
Probably precipitated by the above mentioned resultant atrophy, my shoulder area is extremely sensative to muscle imbalance/strain.  I have suffered with shoulder blade/armpit pain and radiating arm pain for about 10 years, off and on.  Although I do have cervical disk fusion and other neck issues, I was told that what was causing my arm pain are trigger points in the shoulder blade area, particularly in that under the arm area of the shoulder blade.  If I poke that one area, it just about sends me through the ceiling.  Several years ago, I had PT for it, the only thing that seemed to help it was deep tissue massage and ultrasound.  It was great and I was pain free for a couple of years.  Repetitive stress is a contributing factor for me, reaching forward to mouse definite doesn't help and may trigger a flair up.  Unfortunately, from my experience, I need to be vigilant as to the position of my arm and the sensations generated by position.  If I feel even the slightest twinge of pain in my shoulder/pit region, I pull my arm back.  If I persist, it sets it off and the pain lasts for weeks.  In addressing lower back pain, I set my arm pain off real good this time, at times it brings me to tears.  I'm currently trying to find someone to work on my shoulder, again, but the PT people only seem to work one area at a time, so I suffer.  Point is, arm pain can come from trigger points, which can be dealt with fairly easily.

Hi, This sound like the pain I had last yr. before my surgery. Not saying this is what you have, but it couldn't hurt to look into it. I had an impingment in my shoulder, which was pressing on the rotator cuff and nerves. I would experience pain from my neck all the way down to my fingers. The pain in the neck was from the muscles spasms cause they were overworked trying to support the shoulder injury. I went to see an Orthopedic Surgeon, who operated on it last yr. I can't say it is as good as new, but at least I don't live w daily pain in it anymore. I hope you find out what is wrong with it soon, living w chronic pain daily is difficult, to say the least and can be very depressing. Please post back and let me know how it goes if you go to an Orthopedic doctor to have it checked. Blessings,  chippi1

Hi,

Sounds familiar I had the same kind of pain coming from my shoulder on my left hand side all the way down to my hands. the pain felt like it was coming from the bones and was unbearable. I went to the docs and they prescribed me Declonfenax an anti-inflamattory pain killer plus some Kapeke pain killer which consists of 500mg paracetamol. My fingers were very sensitive to the touch and after two days of taking this medication the pain has gone down a lot. I am still weak in the left arm and cannot grab or lift anything easily but getting rid of some the pain is a god send as i have never experienced that kind of pain before. I was told it was a muscle or nerve issue and will get better in the next 5 to 10 days. i hope so as pain of this kind is unbearable and will make it virtually impossible to do anything. Hope this helps anyone reading and hope anyone with any condition gets better soon.

We are having the exact same symptoms.  I am thinking it could be that I sleep on my side and it is on the same left side I sleep on.  The fact that I have extra weight on doesn't help either.  Also, I use the computer constantly for work as well as school and my arms are usually in an uncomfortable position as I type.  The pain has been nagging me for at least two months so I'm trying to sleep on my back instead, and also plan to see a massage therapist soon.  Good luck finding relief because pain killers are not working.

I haven't seen any recent discussion of the possibility of  PMR, (Polymyalgia Rhuematica) as a  possible casue  of arm and shoulder pain.
It is a little understood auto immune disease that usually affects older adults with an average onset age of 60 to 65. It is verified through a blood test and treated with closely monitored dosses of prednisone which are gradually tapered off during an average treatment period of 18 months.
Near total relief from pain comes within 2 to 3 days after initiation of therapy. I had severe pain in both arms and after seeing a family physician he referred me to a rhuematologist who nailed the problem.
