slight, very slight paralisys in left side of mouth

I was looking at my boyfriend (43 year old male, over wieght, start of diebetes, high cholesterol, reflux, other health issues, his meds look like they are for a 100 year old), and I noticed that the left side of his mouth wasn't moving as much as the right side (this is new, really new) and so I stopped him and noticed that it almost kind of sagged a bit. Not sure what would cause that?  If anybody knows, I told him to go to the doctors and he said he has an appointment for January 11 so he will see then, but I am concerned, I worry about a stroke or something, oh and he gets a lot of headaches etc.  He had a headache before I noticed the mouth.  Anybody have any kind of idea as to the cause of this?

thank you, it was wierd it was like that for a few days, and then it went away.  I am taking him to the doctor in a few days and I am going to bring it up to her.  I think it seems important enough to not let it go.

Thank you for your question. Although without being able to examine him I can not offer you the specific advice on diagnosis and treatment that he needs, but I would try to provide you some relevant information about his health concern.

From, your description of symptoms, it appears that he is experiencing unexplained one sided muscle weakness or paralysis of the face that is called Bell’s palsy (inflammation of 7th cranial nerve). Mostly it occurs after some viral infection, any neurological disorder, and head injury or in cancer. Other symptoms could be pain in jaw of the affected side, drooling of saliva, dropping of eyelid, ringing in the ear, headache, decreased sense of taste, difficulty with speech, and problems eating and drinking. Though it is not a life threatening condition, it is essential that a neurologist needs to be immediately consulted who would like to conduct electromyography (EMG test), nerve conduction studies and MRI to find out the extent and cause.  Most of the doctors suggest steroids, anti-retroviral medicines, botulism injection and physiotherapy to recover from the condition. Hope this helps.
