stoke help

by lel222, Oct 16, 2007 11:28PM
My mom suffered a right brain ischemic stroke August 31. She was fortunate to receive the TPA treatment within  the three hour window and regained much if not all of her arm and leg strength and eventually 80-90% of her speech and swallow after many weeks of p/t .o/t and hours of speech and swallow therapy as well. Our problem is concened with ther state of mind, or mostly the loss of it.,So far, without the "helpfull" antiphyschotic drugs she is on the ceiling wiith aggitation and abnormal behavior, including unintentional violence. However with them( Haldol, Seraquel, etc.) she is only benifiting, short term(2-3 days at regular "normal" dosages) and then returning to a physchotic-like state.Has any one else experienced this before. My mom's personality baseline prior to strtoke was NORMAL. Now I'm absolutly terrified and don't know or trust her doctors well wnough!!  ANy feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, LF

Hi.

I am sorry to learn of your mother suffering from an ischemic stroke.

Unfortunately, even if TPA treatment has been given early, there are complications of a stroke that are not immediately regained, depending on the damage the brain has experienced.

Stroke patients do not only have physical complications of weakness, numbness or paralysis, but they also suffer from psychological complications, and it is these complications that are harder to recover from.

I am sure her doctor's are doing all they can to help your mother regain her normal self. Talk to the doctor's about this to help you understand more about your mom's current condition.

Good luck.
