strange smell disorder please help!!!

by shy2speak, Nov 09, 2008 08:55PM
Hello, I have been having this weird smell disorder for a while now. Its like smells come and go. Like if someone was to set a pie next to me i could obviously smell the pie right away but after like 5 min or so i could not smell the pie at all. I can recognize strong smells when i walk into a room...but after awhile they all disappear..and i can't smell anything...i fear i may be giving off an odor that may be neutralizing all the other odors..or smells in the room...i have been to a gastro doctor and she gave me a simple breath test..that came back normal..and she told me to go see a psychologist cause i was imagining the smell..i also went to se an ent doc, and she told me to go get a head ct..i never followed through with that..but maybe i should..am i crazy?...i did do a test where i put on a face mask and waited for like 5 min..took it off..i could smell my friends cooking..but after leaving the mask off for another five or 10 min i couldn't smell her cooking anymore..very frustrating..i fell like i may have one of those disorders that affects 1 in every 5 million people. I hope not...any response is much appreciated thanks!

You don't need to worry about this at all: it is actually normal to lose the awareness of a smell of a substance after a few minutes. This is our brain's way of making sure we're not constantly distracted by sensory stimuli being continuously present in our awareness.

If it only occured recently and you could smell for longer times previously then visit a neurologist and get your olfactory nerve checked for your satisfaction.

Smell is controlled by your 1st cranial nerve called olfactory nerve. Take care and it can also happen due to local irritation in your nose due to allergy, cold etc.
