swollen ankle and knee, discolouration and very hot

my brother fell whilst carry a a cleaning machine at work and swisted is knee and ankle.  
This happened in September 09, he is still off sick with severe pain and swelling to right knee and ankle,
it is constantly hot and has become discoloured.  
He has been for x-rays but there does'nt seem to be any fracture.  Is it normal to take this long to heal?
And what do you think it is?

Thank you for your question. Although without being able to examine you I can not offer you the specific advice on diagnosis and treatment that you need, but I would try to provide you some relevant information about your health concern.

It certainly sound that it is Deep Vein thrombosis due to any clot in veins and includes symptoms of pain, swelling/rise of temperature, redness of the leg with sometimes dilation of the surface veins. It will be best that you consult a doctor who would like to confirm this through blood test, D-dimer test and Doppler USG. According to the condition, anticoagulant therapy, compression stockings may be needed to treat the condition. Hope this information proves helpful to you.
