symptom increase

Dear Doc,

I am a relativley healthy 24 year old male.  I've seen a couple of neuro's before who both think possible bfs.  My only tests have been basic neuro exam, emg, and lyme blood test.(I do live in an area with deer ticks/outdoorsman)  All negative.  I've not had an MRI.  I've had no weakness, ON, fatigue.  My symptoms are mainly sporadic tingling in hands, legs, and other body parts, sporadic muscle twitching.  My left forearm and hand seem to give me the most trouble.  If I'm holding a glass of water with my left hand, you can see a little slight jerk or movement, it is not as steady as my right hand.  Most of the tingling is also in my left hand and forearm.  When I'm out playing basketball and finish up my hands will have an increase in tinging sensation, but after only 5 minutes or so it will subside back to normal levels or no tingling at all.

So to conclude I'll say my symtpoms are sporadic, come and go without warning, somedays have more than others.  Do these symptoms add up with bfs or more so with ms.  I know increase activity can bring on ms symptoms, but would they tend to subside as quickly as mine do after playing some ball.  And do you think a MRI is definately in order.  Thanks in advance.

I'd try and go with what your doc says, unless you think he/she is totally off course.  I also have a hard time of convincing myself the doctor may be right with his analysis.  It seems you always are sure it's the worst!  The best you can do is monitor your symptoms and if you notice any new/worse symptoms go in to see the doc again.  Hope this helps

I've been experiencing the same sort of symptoms.  Had and MRI...came back normal.  Scared of MS.  So, I know how you feel.  This is a great site.  Made me feel better that I'm not the only one with things like this.

I've expierenced numbness in my upper right leg for app. 4 years now. Recently I've expierenced some weakness in my left hand. The weakness comes and goes but the numbness has been constant.I have also had a tingling sensation in my left foot for about 2 months now.Anyone have any thoughts whether this could be ms or not? I was recently diagnosed with a bulging disc in my lower back. My doc is sure this is the reason for my symptoms and not ms. I not convinced. Maybe im a hypochondriac (spelling???). Thanks for any thoughts.

Dear MavO1:

Sorry that you continue to have symptoms.  The symptoms do not sound like they are MS in nature.  Having fasciculations without other signs would be extremely unusual in MS.  As previously stated, I would think that what you describe are more in line with benign fasciculations.  These can come and go and last for years.  They occur more frequently when patients are fatigued or tired, or when they are ill.  They also can wax and wane over time.

Sincerely,

CCF Neuro MD
