tegretol induced peripheral neuritis

by buddy901, Jun 07, 2008 01:12PM
My sister was just evaluated for tegretol induced peripheral neuropathy. This started a couple of days after a dose increase from 400mg/day to 600mg/day. The tegretol is now being reduced back to 400mg but her pain is sever with no relief from oral morphine. 2 questions: 1. does anybody out there know how long it takes for the pain to subside once the tegretol is reduced? 2. any protocols for managing this pain? the ER sent her home with NO pain relief. I am very concerned that she will harm herself. She is "crazy" from the pain.

Any info will be appreciated.

Hello Dear,
The adverse rections of tegretol include-
Dizziness, drowsiness, disturbances of coordination, confusion, headache, fatigue, blurred vision, visual hallucinations, transient diplopia, oculomotor disturbances, nystagmus, speech disturbances, abnormal involuntary movements, peripheral neuritis and paresthesias, depression with agitation, talkativeness, tinnitus, and hyperacusis.
There have been reports of associated paralysis and other symptoms of cerebral arterial insufficiency, but the exact relationship of these reactions to the drug has not been established.
The symptoms may reduce with time. You need to give her good care and support.
